Tooth Extraction in Franklin, TN

At Coyne Oral Surgery, we strive to preserve our patients' natural teeth whenever possible.  However, in some cases we may need to extract a tooth that is infected, broken, or causing problems inside the mouth. Whether you need an emergency tooth extraction or simply need to make room for healthy growth, Dr. Cathleen Coyne and our team are dedicated to making your experience as smooth and comfortable as possible. We can offer multiple sedation techniques, including nitrous oxide and IV sedation, to keep you relaxed and calm. If you're dealing with a broken or infected tooth, we invite you to contact our Franklin, TN dental office to discover if a tooth extraction is the best option to preserve your smile.

Tooth extractions are performed on-site at our Franklin, TN practice. Before starting, we'll provide local anesthesia or more comprehensive sedation to help you stay relaxed and comfortable. Once you're ready, Dr. Coyne will start the extraction. For a simple extraction, Dr. Coyne will loosen up the tooth with a special device called an elevator before removing the tooth. A surgical extraction involves making incisions in your gums to get to the tooth. If necessary, the tooth may be broken up into smaller pieces so it can be removed. After finishing, Dr. Coyne will close the incision in the gums. You may be prescribed antibiotics to take before or after your tooth extraction, especially if you are prone to infections or have other health concerns.

Before you leave, we'll discuss tooth extraction aftercare instructions, including steps you can take to manage pain or bleeding. Depending on how complex the procedure is, it may take you anywhere from a few days to a few weeks for the area to completely heal. In the meantime, you should stick to soft foods (like yogurt, soups, and ice cream) and avoid spicy or hard foods that may irritate your gums.

After your tooth extraction procedure, the type of anesthesia used may require a friend or family member to drive you home, especially following oral surgery with sedation. As your gums begin healing, it is important to avoid smoking, using straws, and spitting to support proper tooth extraction recovery and reduce the risk of complications like dry socket. Healing timelines can vary based on the complexity of the simple or surgical tooth extraction, but most patients find it helpful to stick with soft, cool foods during the first few days. Dr. Coyne will guide you through what to expect and provide personalized instructions for aftercare following tooth extraction to promote healthy healing. Some swelling is normal, and using over-the-counter pain relief along with cold compresses can help manage discomfort, though prescriptions for pain medication or antibiotics may be provided when needed. In addition to any recommended follow-up visits, continuing routine dental exams and professional cleanings at Coyne Oral Surgery allows Dr. Coyne to monitor your oral health after tooth extraction and support long-term dental wellness.

At Coyne Oral Surgery, we understand that the idea of having a tooth removed can be daunting, which is why we're committed to making the process as easy as possible for you. The benefits of tooth extraction include:

  • Protects healthy teeth from damage caused by an infected or impacted tooth
  • Provides a quick, efficient procedure tailored to your needs

Everything was over the top.. from the interior decor to the smiles from the staff. I had a tooth extraction. It took no time. The assistant as well as the entire staff was super nice and comforting. I would definitely recommend Coyne Oral Surgery.

I went in for a cracked tooth extraction and implant. While waiting for that procedure, the staff reviewed my x-rays and recommended taking the wisdom teeth and doing another implant for a tooth extraction from about 5 years back. My wisdom teeth were causing crowding and they guided me to an excellent decision. Since I was there already and was going to be sedated anyway, why not remedy the wisdom teeth issue and do both implants. I didn't feel pressured in any way. It was a great suggestion and I have absolutely no regrets. It was a lot of work in one sitting, but these folks are elite. I'm twelve days post procedure at the time I'm writing this and recovery is going just fine. I highly recommend Coyne.

Had my wisdom teeth extracted with Dr. Coyne around a year ago today. They were impacted and she did a great job. My husband is now getting his extracted this week from her as well, and I know he and others will be in good hands if they choose her and her team. Her surgical assistant is top tier, talked with me prior to sedation due to my fears and severe dental anxiety. They were patient and so kind to me, you don’t find many places that treat and care for you more than just a patient in their office. 🦷 💜 Even after the procedure I asked for a picture with Dr. Coyne 🙂

Dr. Coyne and her staff are amazing. Took exceptional care of my daughter for her wisdom teeth. They explained everything from what to expect during and after and put her at ease for the procedure. Highly recommend Coyne Oral Surgery.

No one looks forward to going to the dentist and especially getting a tooth pulled. When I found out my insurance wouldn’t pay for me to be put out Dr. Coyne and her staff made this experience the best it could possibly be. Dr. Coyne’s nurse talked me through the process and eased my anxiety, and encouraged me that I could do it with just the Nitrous Oxygen and she would be right there to talk me through everything. She was very kind and compassionate, because I was very nervous about it. This saved me a lot of money out of pocket, I mean A LOT of money. I’m so glad she encouraged me because the whole procedure only lasted a few minutes and I didn’t feel any pain, plus I saved a ton of money because of her encouragement and I probably wouldn’t have even tried to do it without her encouraging me to. Dr. Coyne did a wonderful job and my recovery was very easy as well. Afterwards, they called to check in on me. You can tell they care about their patients at this practice. It was also easy to get an appointment and the office was very clean and comfortable. I highly recommend them if you have any extractions or oral surgeries you need.

Tooth extraction is typically recommended only when a tooth cannot be predictably restored or when its presence threatens surrounding structures. Determining candidacy involves evaluating both the condition of the tooth and your overall oral health. You may be a candidate for tooth extraction if you:

  • Have non-restorable decay
  • Experience severe infection
  • Have structural tooth fracture
  • Are preparing for orthodontic treatment
  • Are medically stable for minor surgery

Whenever possible, conservative options are explored first. Our team will confirm whether tooth extraction is truly necessary and discuss next steps for replacement or healing.

Is tooth extraction painful?

With modern dentistry techniques and anesthesia, tooth extractions are generally not painful. During the procedure in Franklin, TN, the area is completely numbed to ensure your comfort. Some pressure may be felt, but not pain. After the extraction, mild discomfort or soreness is normal, but it can be managed with prescribed pain relievers and proper aftercare.

What happens if I delay a necessary tooth extraction?

Delaying a needed extraction can lead to worsening pain, infection, or damage to surrounding teeth and gums. Infections can spread and cause more serious health issues if left untreated. Timely intervention at Coyne Oral Surgery helps prevent complications and ensures better outcomes.

What if I have dental anxiety?

Our team is committed to making your experience as stress-free as possible, offering sedation options like nitrous oxide and IV sedation to ease anxiety. Dr. Coyne takes a compassionate approach to treatment and can explain each step to help you feel comfortable. Open communication about your concerns ensures you have a positive experience.
