What Is PRF Treatment?
Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is a treatment designed to work with your body's natural healing process, helping you feel better sooner. At Coyne Oral Surgery, we use PRF in dental procedures like tooth extractions, dental implants, and bone grafting to support recovery. Dr. Cathleen Coyne carefully incorporates PRF into treatments, using a small sample of your blood to create a concentrated solution rich in growth factors that reduce swelling, repair tissue, and promote faster healing. If you're curious about how PRF can improve your recovery and get you smiling faster after oral surgery, contact our Franklin, TN, office to schedule a consultation.
How Do PRF Dental Treatments Work?
Platelet-rich fibrin at Coyne Oral Surgery is often incorporated into surgical plans to support healing and improve recovery. During your consultation, Dr. Coyne will talk more about what you can expect and whether you might benefit from PRF. Before your procedure begins, we'll draw a small sample of blood and process it to separate the platelets and fibrin, both of which contain growth factors. We'll then inject the PRF serum into the surgery site, where it should help reduce swelling, promote tissue repair, alleviate swelling, and speed up the healing process. Compared to platelet-rich plasma (PRP), PRF releases these healing factors more gradually, providing longer-lasting benefits.
What Can I Expect After PRF Treatment?
Most patients experience a quicker and more comfortable recovery when PRF is used. The growth factors in PRF help to reduce post-operative pain and swelling, and you may notice faster healing of the surgical site. Dr. Coyne will provide you with specific aftercare instructions to ensure the best possible outcome. Following these instructions, along with the added boost from PRF, can help you get back to your normal routine sooner. If you have any questions during the recovery process, our team is always here to help.
What Are the Benefits of PRF Treatment?
We're excited to offer PRF at Coyne Oral Surgery because we're dedicated to helping you recover as quickly and comfortably as possible. By tapping into your body's natural healing abilities, PRF supports a smoother recovery with less discomfort. The benefits of this treatment include:
- Speeds up recovery by promoting natural healing
- Reduces swelling and discomfort after surgery
- Supports tissue repair for healthier and stronger results
- Provides extended healing benefits with gradual growth factor release
- Lowers the risk of complications by using your own blood
Am I A Candidate For PRF Treatment?
Most people who are healthy enough for oral surgery are good candidates for platelet-rich fibrin. During your consultation, Dr. Coyne will review your medical history and discuss your treatment goals to determine if PRF is right for you. It's a great option for patients undergoing tooth extractions, dental implant placement, or bone grafting who want to support natural healing and experience a smoother, faster recovery. Dr. Coyne will answer any questions you have and outline how PRF will be integrated into your specific surgical plan to achieve the best possible outcomes.
Coyne Oral Surgery Reviews
Everything was over the top.. from the interior decor to the smiles from the staff. I had a tooth extraction. It took no time. The assistant as well as the entire staff was super nice and comforting. I would definitely recommend Coyne Oral Surgery.
I went in for a cracked tooth extraction and implant. While waiting for that procedure, the staff reviewed my x-rays and recommended taking the wisdom teeth and doing another implant for a tooth extraction from about 5 years back. My wisdom teeth were causing crowding and they guided me to an excellent decision. Since I was there already and was going to be sedated anyway, why not remedy the wisdom teeth issue and do both implants. I didn't feel pressured in any way. It was a great suggestion and I have absolutely no regrets. It was a lot of work in one sitting, but these folks are elite. I'm twelve days post procedure at the time I'm writing this and recovery is going just fine. I highly recommend Coyne.
Dr. Coyne is wonderful and always available even in an emergency.Marlena is also so comforting and puts you at ease during a stressful surgery.I appreciate the whole staff at Coyne Oral Surgery!
I can't say enough about Dr. Coyne and her staff. If I could give more stars I would. In the consultation, she listened attentively to my concerns and took the time to share the information that I was needing to make the right choice with my procedure. Ultimately, when it was all done, her work exceeded my expectations. She went above and beyond what I had hoped for. Her whole staff really makes you feel at home. Marlena was very caring and helpful, always ensuring I felt comfortable throughout my time there. As a patient, having to get dental work done can be frustrating, as you're not sure of the outcome or who you can trust to provide the service you need. Dr. Coyne and her staff proved to be the best choice, giving me an even better result than I was hoping for. Thank you!
He is a very gentle and kind dentist. I highly recommend this place.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is PRF different from PRP, and why would my oral surgeon choose PRF for my procedure?
While both PRF (platelet-rich fibrin) and PRP (platelet-rich plasma) use your blood’s natural growth factors to promote healing, PRF is processed without anticoagulants, creating a fibrin matrix that releases healing factors more gradually over time. This slow release supports longer-lasting benefits for tissue repair and regeneration. Dr. Coyne may choose PRF because it’s 100% natural, easy to incorporate during surgery, and offers excellent results in enhancing healing after extractions, implants, or bone grafts.
Will adding PRF to my procedure increase my recovery time or require extra appointments?
No. In fact, PRF actually works to reduce your recovery time by promoting faster tissue regeneration and minimizing inflammation. The PRF process is completed during your scheduled procedure, requiring only a quick blood draw before surgery, so no additional appointments are needed. Patients often find their recovery feels smoother and more comfortable when PRF is included.
Is PRF safe for everyone, and are there any risks to using it during oral surgery?
Because PRF is created from your own blood without any additives, it is extremely safe and carries virtually no risk of allergic reaction or rejection. However, patients with certain blood clotting disorders or those on specific medications may not be candidates for PRF treatment. Dr. Coyne will review your medical history in detail to ensure it is a safe and beneficial option for your procedure.
