At Coyne Oral Surgery, our patients' comfort and safety are our top priorities. That's why we're pleased to offer a variety of anesthesia and sedative options, including local anesthesia for dental procedures like tooth extractions. With a short, simple injection, we can selectively numb parts of your mouth, allowing you to get the treatment you need with minimal discomfort. Local anesthesia is a trusted and effective way to manage pain during dental procedures, helping to ensure your experience is as comfortable as possible. Discover if you're a candidate for local anesthesia and schedule your consultation with Dr. Cathleen Coyne by reaching out to our office in Franklin, TN today. We're committed to providing you with a top-notch dental experience.

During your consultation, Dr. Coyne will examine your teeth and gums to determine if they need any extra attention that might require local anesthesia. We'll also discuss whether local anesthetic is the best option or if you may benefit from other sedation dentistry options. Before starting your procedure, we'll gently inject the local anesthesia into your gums around the treatment area, taking care to limit any discomfort as much as possible. You should feel that part of your mouth go numb within minutes, but you won't feel sleepy or "foggy." Once we're finished with your treatment, you can get right back to your day. You'll have some numbness around the treatment area, but the effects of the anesthesia should fade within 2 – 3 hours. Side effects from local anesthesia are rare and may include tingling, swelling, or bruising, all of which should pass.

Anesthetic shots used for dental procedures typically contain lidocaine, a nerve block commonly used in injections. If you have any concerns about the ingredients in your anesthetic injection, we invite you to bring them up with Dr. Coyne during your consultation. We'll help you find the solution that's right for your needs.

At Coyne Oral Surgery, we believe that every patient deserves a smooth and comfortable dental experience. Local anesthesia offers several benefits that make dental treatments more straightforward and less stressful for our patients, including:

  • Allows for a quick recovery so patients can get back to their day
  • Has fewer risks and side effects compared to general anesthesia
  • Keeps patients awake, which can help reduce anxiety
  • Can be paired with deeper sedation options
  • Can be administered quickly, saving time in the dental office
  • Affects only the treated area, with minimal impact on the rest of the body

Dr. Coyne and her staff are really awesome. They knew I was nervous about my tooth extraction, and walked me through every step, reassuring me along the way (as I did not get sedation). The team worked quickly and my sad tooth was out before I even knew it! Would recommend to anyone who has anxiety about dental procedures.

I had a tooth extraction done yesterday at Coyne Oral surgery, of course I was very apprehensive about having this done. I have a very small mouth, so I'm glad I chose to have IV sedation. Everything went very smoothly, I had a little pain yesterday after I got home, but today I'm absolutely fine! Highly recommend Dr. Coyne!

If I could give 20 stars, I would! The doctor and entire staff are truly fabulous! If you have high anxiety when it comes to oral surgery, then this practice is for you! I came in a nervous train wreck! The entire staff was very accommodating and very comforting. All of my options were 100% explained. The anesthesia was perfect. The doctor, Dr. Kathleen Coyne, did a wonderful job with my multiple extractions. It's only been one day and my gums are healing wonderfully! Pain is well under control. I highly recommend Coyne Oral Surgery for all of your dental needs! If I were still working, I would adore working with this awesome staff! 😃🙌

I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at Coyne Oral Surgery. As someone who’s had several professional (and even pleasant) interactions with staff at different dental offices, this one was the most personable and memorable.Ashley, Melissa, Marlena, and Dr. Coyne explained everything to me and my wife, were very patient throughout the process, and kept me in good spirits the entire time. We also shared a couple of lighthearted jokes that made it feel more like friends passing the time than a serious procedure. It was also my first time going under via sedation, and though they say I was under for over an hour, I was convinced I was “awake for the entire 15 minutes!”Such a refreshing experience! Thank you so much!

During your consultation, we will review your medical history to ensure local anesthesia is the most appropriate option for your needs.

How long does local anesthesia last after a dental procedure?
