General Anesthesia in Franklin, TN

General anesthesia in dentistry involves using an intravenous (IV) line to numb any pain and help the patient remain calm and relaxed during their treatment. At Coyne Oral Surgery, we often recommend general anesthesia for dental work that is more complex or intensive, such as wisdom tooth removal or dental implant surgery. This option makes it easy and convenient for our patients in Franklin, TN to get the advanced care they deserve with minimal discomfort. If you need to have dental work done, we invite you to reach out to our office to set up your consultation with Dr. Cathleen Coyne. She'll help you explore your dental anesthesia options and decide on the best way to enhance and protect your smile.

Before scheduling your procedure, Dr. Coyne will sit with you to discuss your concerns and perform a thorough examination of your teeth and gums. If general anesthesia is recommended for your procedure, we'll discuss your options and what you can expect. General anesthesia at Coyne Oral Surgery is administered through an IV drip directly into your bloodstream. Throughout your procedure, a member of our team will closely monitor your health and make any adjustments as needed to keep you safe and comfortable. We'll also provide a mask to deliver supplemental oxygen.

We usually recommend general anesthesia for more complicated or lengthy surgeries. For more minor procedures, we may recommend local anesthetic, IV sedation, or nitrous oxide to keep you relaxed without putting you completely "under." During your consultation, we can go over the differences between IV sedation and general anesthesia and discuss which method we recommend for you.

At Coyne Oral Surgery, we are dedicated to making each patient's dental experience comfortable, efficient, and pleasant. General anesthesia is just one way we demonstrate our commitment to patient care, offering benefits that include:

  • Provides safe, quick, and effective sedation
  • Numbs the patient, ensuring a relaxed procedure
  • Allows our team to carry out complex or multiple treatments in a single visit
  • Enriches the overall dental treatment appointment for people
  • Reduces patient motion throughout oral treatments
  • Reduces anxiety in patients with dental phobia

Dr. Coyne and her staff are really awesome. They knew I was nervous about my tooth extraction, and walked me through every step, reassuring me along the way (as I did not get sedation). The team worked quickly and my sad tooth was out before I even knew it! Would recommend to anyone who has anxiety about dental procedures.

I had a tooth extraction done yesterday at Coyne Oral surgery, of course I was very apprehensive about having this done. I have a very small mouth, so I'm glad I chose to have IV sedation. Everything went very smoothly, I had a little pain yesterday after I got home, but today I'm absolutely fine! Highly recommend Dr. Coyne!

If I could give 20 stars, I would! The doctor and entire staff are truly fabulous! If you have high anxiety when it comes to oral surgery, then this practice is for you! I came in a nervous train wreck! The entire staff was very accommodating and very comforting. All of my options were 100% explained. The anesthesia was perfect. The doctor, Dr. Kathleen Coyne, did a wonderful job with my multiple extractions. It's only been one day and my gums are healing wonderfully! Pain is well under control. I highly recommend Coyne Oral Surgery for all of your dental needs! If I were still working, I would adore working with this awesome staff! 😃🙌

I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at Coyne Oral Surgery. As someone who’s had several professional (and even pleasant) interactions with staff at different dental offices, this one was the most personable and memorable.Ashley, Melissa, Marlena, and Dr. Coyne explained everything to me and my wife, were very patient throughout the process, and kept me in good spirits the entire time. We also shared a couple of lighthearted jokes that made it feel more like friends passing the time than a serious procedure. It was also my first time going under via sedation, and though they say I was under for over an hour, I was convinced I was “awake for the entire 15 minutes!”Such a refreshing experience! Thank you so much!

General anesthesia may be recommended for more complex oral surgery cases or for people who prefer to be fully asleep during treatment. It allows for a controlled, monitored environment where procedures can be completed efficiently while you remain completely unaware of the process. Our team carefully reviews your medical history, the type of procedure being performed, and your comfort level to determine if general anesthesia is the right option. You may be considered for general anesthesia if your situation involves factors like:

  • Severe anxiety
  • Complex surgery
  • Multiple procedures
  • Special needs
  • Medical considerations

These circumstances may make deeper sedation the safest and most comfortable approach for completing treatment.

Is general anesthesia safe for dental procedures?

Yes, general anesthesia is a safe option for dental procedures when administered by trained professionals. At Coyne Oral Surgery, we closely monitor your health throughout the surgery to ensure your safety and comfort. Our team will take all necessary precautions to provide a safe and stress-free experience.

How do I prepare for a procedure with general anesthesia?

Before your procedure, Dr. Coyne will provide specific instructions, including fasting guidelines and what medications to avoid. You’ll also need to arrange for someone to drive you home, as you won’t be able to drive after receiving anesthesia. Following these steps ensures a smooth and safe experience.

Will I feel any pain during or after the procedure?

You won’t feel any pain during the procedure since general anesthesia numbs the pain and keeps you unconscious. Afterward, you may experience some mild discomfort, which can be managed with pain medication. Our staff in Franklin, TN, will provide you with aftercare instructions to ensure a comfortable recovery.

Don't let anxiety stop you from getting the top-tier dental care you deserve.
