What Is Nitrous Oxide Used for in Dentistry?
If you've been putting off visits to the dentist due to fear or anxiety, you might be an ideal candidate for nitrous oxide sedation. Sometimes known as "laughing gas," nitrous oxide is a sedative that gives patients a relaxed, euphoric feeling, making it easier to get the dental treatment you need with minimal side effects or discomfort. At Coyne Oral Surgery, we often use nitrous oxide for more complex dental work, including oral surgery, though it can also be used to help calm patients with severe dental anxiety. To learn more about our sedation options, reach out to our office in Franklin, TN and schedule your consultation with Dr. Cathleen Coyne. We'll be happy to help you determine which approach is right for you.
How Does Nitrous Oxide Sedation Work?
Nitrous oxide is administered through a specialized mask that fits over your nose. The gas will take effect quickly as you inhale it, making you feel sleepy but fully in control of your body. Throughout your procedure, we'll continue to monitor your health and adjust the dosage of nitrous oxide as necessary. The standard concentration of nitrous oxide for most patients is between 20 – 50%, but this will depend on your body's response. Our team is well-versed in sedation dentistry and will prioritize your comfort and safety. Once the procedure is done, we'll switch the mask to 100% oxygen to help bring you "out," which usually takes just a few minutes.
What Are the Benefits of Nitrous Oxide Sedation?
Nitrous oxide offers a convenient sedation option between local anesthesia and general anesthesia, allowing you to stay awake without compromising your comfort. Some of the benefits of nitrous oxide sedation at our Franklin, TN office include:
- Provides a low, controlled level of sedation
- Useful for patients of every age
- Tapers off fast, allowing patients to return to regular activities
- Can help lessen gag reflex, enabling treatments to be more relaxing
- Limited risk of side effects
- Makes treatment possible for patients with severe dental anxiety
- Starts to work right away, providing restfulness in minutes
Nitrous oxide dental sedation is not covered by most insurance plans, but there may be exceptions for patients who struggle with dental phobia. We'll be happy to discuss costs and alternative options during your consultation.
Coyne Oral Surgery Reviews
Had my wisdom teeth extracted with Dr. Coyne around a year ago today. They were impacted and she did a great job. My husband is now getting his extracted this week from her as well, and I know he and others will be in good hands if they choose her and her team. Her surgical assistant is top tier, talked with me prior to sedation due to my fears and severe dental anxiety. They were patient and so kind to me, you don’t find many places that treat and care for you more than just a patient in their office. 🦷 💜 Even after the procedure I asked for a picture with Dr. Coyne 🙂
Dr. Coyne and her staff are amazing. Took exceptional care of my daughter for her wisdom teeth. They explained everything from what to expect during and after and put her at ease for the procedure. Highly recommend Coyne Oral Surgery.
Everything was over the top.. from the interior decor to the smiles from the staff. I had a tooth extraction. It took no time. The assistant as well as the entire staff was super nice and comforting. I would definitely recommend Coyne Oral Surgery.
I went in for a cracked tooth extraction and implant. While waiting for that procedure, the staff reviewed my x-rays and recommended taking the wisdom teeth and doing another implant for a tooth extraction from about 5 years back. My wisdom teeth were causing crowding and they guided me to an excellent decision. Since I was there already and was going to be sedated anyway, why not remedy the wisdom teeth issue and do both implants. I didn't feel pressured in any way. It was a great suggestion and I have absolutely no regrets. It was a lot of work in one sitting, but these folks are elite. I'm twelve days post procedure at the time I'm writing this and recovery is going just fine. I highly recommend Coyne.
Dr. Coyne is wonderful and always available even in an emergency.Marlena is also so comforting and puts you at ease during a stressful surgery.I appreciate the whole staff at Coyne Oral Surgery!

Am I A Candidate For Nitrous Oxide?
Nitrous oxide is an excellent option for patients who experience dental anxiety or fear. It is also beneficial for those undergoing lengthy or complex procedures, such as wisdom tooth extraction or dental implant surgery. Additionally, individuals with a strong gag reflex or difficulty getting numb with local anesthesia may find nitrous oxide helpful. However, it may not be suitable for everyone. Patients with certain respiratory conditions or pregnant women are typically advised against using nitrous oxide. The best way to determine if you are a good candidate is to discuss your medical history and concerns with Dr. Coyne during your consultation.
