What Is IV Sedation in Dentistry?
For many people, even routine dental visits can be an anxiety-inducing experience, making it difficult for them to get the care they need for their smile. At Coyne Oral Surgery, we believe everyone deserves to have a calm, pleasant experience when they come to visit us, which is why we offer intravenous (IV) sedation at our Franklin, TN office. IV sedation can be a great option for patients with several dental fears or those undergoing more complex procedures. Unlike general anesthesia, IV sedation is designed to keep you in a state of "twilight," drifting in and out of sleep without ever falling fully unconscious. To learn more about IV sedation and other options we offer, contact Coyne Oral Surgery and schedule your consultation with Dr. Cathleen Coyne today.
How Does Dental IV Sedation Work?
During your consultation, Dr. Coyne will first perform a comprehensive oral exam before discussing your treatment options and which sedation method is recommended for you. IV sedation is administered through a line connected directly to one of your veins, allowing the solution to reach your bloodstream quickly and efficiently. You should quickly relax and fall into a state of near-sleep, at which point Dr. Coyne will start your procedure. Once your treatment is done, we'll remove the IV line, and you should "wake up" within 20 minutes or so.
The IV drip we use at Coyne Oral Surgery features a mixture of medical ingredients, including midazolam, to relax you and cloud the memory of your treatment. If you have any concerns about the ingredients in your IV sedation mix or what to expect during your procedure, you are welcome to bring those up with our team before your procedure. We're happy to answer any questions you might have so you can feel at ease.
What Are the Benefits of IV Sedation Dentistry?
Our team at Coyne Oral Surgery is committed to delivering the highest level of care and comfort, no matter how complex your dental health needs may be. IV sedation offers an improved experience for our patients, with benefits that include:

- Provides a greater amount of sedation for intense dental anxiety
- Sedation levels can be monitored and adjusted
- Facilitates longer and more extensive treatments
- Allows patients to feel calm and relaxed

The cost of IV sedation can vary depending on the length of your procedure and the blend we use. Some dental insurance plans may cover the cost of IV sedation, but this is not always the case. Our team is here to help you navigate your options and find a plan that fits your budget.
IV Sedation Reviews
I had a tooth extraction done yesterday at Coyne Oral surgery, of course I was very apprehensive about having this done. I have a very small mouth, so I'm glad I chose to have IV sedation. Everything went very smoothly, I had a little pain yesterday after I got home, but today I'm absolutely fine! Highly recommend Dr. Coyne!
