What Are Implant-Supported Dentures?
For many people, the word "dentures" brings up memories of older family members struggling to keep their teeth in place with pastes and other adhesives. At Coyne Oral Surgery, we offer a more sophisticated denture solution for patients in Franklin, TN: implant-supported dentures. These replacement teeth are securely anchored in your jawbone with metal posts, empowering you to eat, talk, and smile with confidence. With their durable construction and natural look, implant-supported dentures provide a long-lasting solution that feels and functions like your real teeth. If you're ready to explore how implant-supported dentures can enhance your quality of life, schedule a consultation with Dr. Cathleen Coyne today.
How Do Implant Denture Treatments Work?
To make sure your mouth is healthy enough for implant dentures, Dr. Coyne will perform a thorough exam with digital x-rays to assess the strength of your gums and jawbone. If the gums or jawbone are too weak to hold the implanted posts, a bone and/or gum graft surgery may be performed. Once the area has healed and is strong enough, we'll schedule your denture implant surgery. Depending on your needs, we can replace the upper arch, lower arch, or both.
Your mouth will be numbed with local anesthesia before the surgery. Other sedation options (including IV sedation or nitrous oxide) can be considered if the process will be lengthy or if it helps you feel more comfortable. Dr. Coyne will make surgical incisions in your gums and put implant posts in the holes in the jawbone. Implant-supported dentures typically require at least four posts in each arch (upper and lower) to stay in place. After placing the implant, Dr. Coyne will close up the incisions, leaving part of the post above the gumline. The posts will be covered with a temporary denture as your mouth heals and the implants integrate with your jawbone and gums, which usually takes 4 – 6 months. Once the healing period is complete, Dr. Coyne will attach your custom-made dentures and adjust them for the most secure fit.

Coyne Oral Surgery Reviews
Had my wisdom teeth extracted with Dr. Coyne around a year ago today. They were impacted and she did a great job. My husband is now getting his extracted this week from her as well, and I know he and others will be in good hands if they choose her and her team. Her surgical assistant is top tier, talked with me prior to sedation due to my fears and severe dental anxiety. They were patient and so kind to me, you don’t find many places that treat and care for you more than just a patient in their office. 🦷 💜 Even after the procedure I asked for a picture with Dr. Coyne 🙂
Dr. Coyne and her staff are amazing. Took exceptional care of my daughter for her wisdom teeth. They explained everything from what to expect during and after and put her at ease for the procedure. Highly recommend Coyne Oral Surgery.
Everything was over the top.. from the interior decor to the smiles from the staff. I had a tooth extraction. It took no time. The assistant as well as the entire staff was super nice and comforting. I would definitely recommend Coyne Oral Surgery.
I went in for a cracked tooth extraction and implant. While waiting for that procedure, the staff reviewed my x-rays and recommended taking the wisdom teeth and doing another implant for a tooth extraction from about 5 years back. My wisdom teeth were causing crowding and they guided me to an excellent decision. Since I was there already and was going to be sedated anyway, why not remedy the wisdom teeth issue and do both implants. I didn't feel pressured in any way. It was a great suggestion and I have absolutely no regrets. It was a lot of work in one sitting, but these folks are elite. I'm twelve days post procedure at the time I'm writing this and recovery is going just fine. I highly recommend Coyne.
Dr. Coyne is wonderful and always available even in an emergency.Marlena is also so comforting and puts you at ease during a stressful surgery.I appreciate the whole staff at Coyne Oral Surgery!

Am I A Candidate For Implant-Supported Dentures?
Ideal candidates for implant-supported dentures are individuals who are missing most or all of their teeth in one or both arches and are seeking a more stable, long-lasting solution than traditional dentures. Good candidates should have adequate jawbone density to support the implants and be in good overall health, free from conditions that could impair healing. Smokers may be advised to quit, as smoking can negatively affect the success of the implant integration. During your initial consultation, Dr. Coyne will discuss your medical history and dental goals to determine if this treatment is the right option for you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will implant-supported dentures feel different from traditional dentures?
Yes, implant-supported dentures provide a very different experience compared to traditional removable dentures. Because they are anchored securely into your jawbone with implants, they feel more stable and natural when you speak or chew, without the worry of slipping or needing adhesives. Many patients say they feel more like natural teeth, restoring confidence in eating and smiling without discomfort or movement.
What happens if I don't have enough bone to support dental implants for dentures?
If your jawbone has weakened or resorbed over time, you may still be able to get implant-supported dentures after undergoing bone grafting procedures. Bone grafts build up the bone in areas where it has thinned, creating a stronger foundation for implants. Dr. Coyne will evaluate your bone density with digital imaging during your consultation and discuss grafting or other preparatory treatments needed to ensure your implants are successful.
How do I care for implant-supported dentures after they are placed?
Caring for implant-supported dentures involves maintaining excellent oral hygiene to keep your gums healthy and prevent any infection around the implants. You should brush your dentures and gums gently twice daily and use any specialized cleaning tools recommended by our team to clean around the implant posts. Regular dental visits are essential to monitor the health of your implants, ensure your dentures remain fitted properly, and address any potential issues early.
