All-on-4 Dental Implants vs Dentures: Which Option Is Right for You?

Whether you're missing some teeth or a full arch, you're likely deciding between All-on-4 dental implants and dentures as a solution. So which option should you choose? The answer comes down to your overall jawbone health, budget, lifestyle preferences, and overall health, since both options can restore a full, functional smile in different ways.

At Coyne Oral Surgery in Franklin, TN, our team offers both treatments and can help you understand which will work for your goals. Call today to schedule a consultation and get a personalized recommendation.

How do All-on-4 dental implants work?

All-on-4 dental implants are designed to address every missing tooth in a full arch at the same time. During treatment, our team strategically places four titanium implants into your jawbone, which act as anchors for a full arch of prosthetic teeth. Once the implants fuse with the jawbone over time, they provide a stable foundation for your new smile.

Because the implants integrate directly with the bone, this option also helps preserve jawbone density, which naturally declines after tooth loss. Most people leave with a temporary set of teeth the same day as their surgery, with the new restoration placed after healing is complete.

What are dentures?

So, what are dentures? These removable appliances replace missing teeth by resting on the gums instead of being anchored into the jawbone. Full dentures can replace an entire arch of teeth and are custom-fitted to match the shape of your mouth and the appearance you want. Modern denture materials have improved significantly over the years, giving today's dentures a far more natural look than older versions.

Because dentures aren't surgically placed, they involve a simpler, less invasive process to obtain. However, they don't provide the same stimulation to the jawbone that implants do. Many patients find they require more adjustments and occasional relining as the shape of the gums changes over time.

Comparing your tooth replacement options

Choosing between All-on-4 implants and traditional dentures starts with an evaluation at our office. Our team will consider:

  • Your jawbone density: Sufficient bone is needed to support fixed implants, while full dentures don't require the same foundation.
  • Your budget and timeline: Implants typically involve a higher upfront cost but often prove more cost-effective over time, while dentures usually cost less initially.
  • Your lifestyle: Patients who want a fixed, non-removable solution often lean toward implants, while others prefer the flexibility of removing dentures at night.
  • Your overall health: Certain medical conditions can affect candidacy for surgery, which our team will review carefully.

Both paths can restore your ability to eat, speak, and smile with more confidence after tooth loss. Our trained staff will help you choose the option that fits your needs and goals.

No one looks forward to going to the dentist and especially getting a tooth pulled. When I found out my insurance wouldn’t pay for me to be put out Dr. Coyne and her staff made this experience the best it could possibly be. Dr. Coyne’s nurse talked me through the process and eased my anxiety, and encouraged me that I could do it with just the Nitrous Oxygen and she would be right there to talk me through everything. She was very kind and compassionate, because I was very nervous about it. This saved me a lot of money out of pocket, I mean A LOT of money. I’m so glad she encouraged me because the whole procedure only lasted a few minutes and I didn’t feel any pain, plus I saved a ton of money because of her encouragement and I probably wouldn’t have even tried to do it without her encouraging me to. Dr. Coyne did a wonderful job and my recovery was very easy as well. Afterwards, they called to check in on me. You can tell they care about their patients at this practice. It was also easy to get an appointment and the office was very clean and comfortable. I highly recommend them if you have any extractions or oral surgeries you need.

Had my wisdom teeth extracted with Dr. Coyne around a year ago today. They were impacted and she did a great job. My husband is now getting his extracted this week from her as well, and I know he and others will be in good hands if they choose her and her team. Her surgical assistant is top tier, talked with me prior to sedation due to my fears and severe dental anxiety. They were patient and so kind to me, you don’t find many places that treat and care for you more than just a patient in their office. 🦷 💜 Even after the procedure I asked for a picture with Dr. Coyne 🙂

Dr. Coyne and her staff are amazing. Took exceptional care of my daughter for her wisdom teeth. They explained everything from what to expect during and after and put her at ease for the procedure. Highly recommend Coyne Oral Surgery.
