If you're missing one or more teeth, choosing between dentures or implants can feel overwhelming. Both options can restore your smile and function, but they offer different experiences in terms of feel, longevity, maintenance, and cost. At Coyne Oral Surgery, we help patients explore the pros and cons of dental implants and dentures to determine the most effective, long-term solution possible for their unique needs.

Choosing between dentures and dental implants can be a significant decision. We are here to walk you through the key differences and help you determine which option fits your needs and lifestyle. Read on to learn more; then contact our Franklin, TN office to schedule a consultation.

Understanding the difference between implants and dentures

Dental implants are small titanium posts placed surgically into the jawbone, where they fuse with the bone to act as artificial tooth roots. Once healed, they support a crown, bridge, or denture that looks and functions like a natural tooth. Dentures, on the other hand, are removable prosthetic appliances designed to sit on top of the gums. They can replace several or all teeth in one or both jaws and are custom-fitted for comfort and appearance.

If you're asking whether to choose implants or dentures, understanding how each works — and how they fit into your lifestyle — is key.

What's the difference between getting implants and dentures?

The primary difference between getting dental implants and dentures lies in the procedure, permanence, and long-term function. Dental implants require a surgical process in which titanium posts are placed into the jawbone, followed by a healing period of 3 – 6 months and the attachment of a custom crown or prosthesis, resulting in a stable, long-term solution that closely mimics natural teeth.

In contrast, dentures are removable appliances that rest on the gums and do not involve surgery. They can typically be created and fitted more quickly and at a lower upfront cost than dental implants. While implants offer greater durability, bone preservation, and day-to-day comfort, dentures provide a noninvasive, more affordable option for patients seeking to replace multiple or all missing teeth.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Dental implants are a popular choice among patients who want a lasting, low-maintenance option. Benefits of dental implant surgery include:

  • Durability: Implants can last decades or even a lifetime with proper care.
  • Bone preservation: They stimulate the jawbone, helping to prevent bone loss, which is often seen with tooth loss.
  • Natural feel: Implants look, feel, and function like natural teeth.
  • No slipping or shifting: They're stable and secure, even when eating or speaking.
  • Low maintenance: Brush and floss just like you would with natural teeth.

What are the benefits of dentures?

For patients looking for a nonsurgical or more budget-conscious option, dentures offer several benefits. Some benefits of dentures include:

  • Affordability: Dentures are less expensive upfront compared to implants.
  • Quick turnaround: Dentures can typically be made and fitted faster than implants.
  • Noninvasive: No surgery is required, making them suitable for patients with certain medical conditions.
  • Full arch replacement: Dentures can easily restore teeth in one or both arches, making them ideal for complete tooth loss.

Are dentures or dental implants better?

The answer depends on your goals, oral health, lifestyle, and budget. Dental implants offer virtually unmatched stability, bone preservation, and natural aesthetics, but they do involve surgery and a higher upfront cost. They may also require pre-implant surgeries, such as bone grafting, to be a candidate. Dentures, while more affordable and noninvasive, may require adjustments over time and don't prevent jawbone loss.

Had my wisdom teeth extracted with Dr. Coyne around a year ago today. They were impacted and she did a great job. My husband is now getting his extracted this week from her as well, and I know he and others will be in good hands if they choose her and her team. Her surgical assistant is top tier, talked with me prior to sedation due to my fears and severe dental anxiety. They were patient and so kind to me, you don’t find many places that treat and care for you more than just a patient in their office. 🦷 💜 Even after the procedure I asked for a picture with Dr. Coyne 🙂

Dr. Coyne and her staff are amazing. Took exceptional care of my daughter for her wisdom teeth. They explained everything from what to expect during and after and put her at ease for the procedure. Highly recommend Coyne Oral Surgery.

Everything was over the top.. from the interior decor to the smiles from the staff. I had a tooth extraction. It took no time. The assistant as well as the entire staff was super nice and comforting. I would definitely recommend Coyne Oral Surgery.

I went in for a cracked tooth extraction and implant. While waiting for that procedure, the staff reviewed my x-rays and recommended taking the wisdom teeth and doing another implant for a tooth extraction from about 5 years back. My wisdom teeth were causing crowding and they guided me to an excellent decision. Since I was there already and was going to be sedated anyway, why not remedy the wisdom teeth issue and do both implants. I didn't feel pressured in any way. It was a great suggestion and I have absolutely no regrets. It was a lot of work in one sitting, but these folks are elite. I'm twelve days post procedure at the time I'm writing this and recovery is going just fine. I highly recommend Coyne.
